Clevatess Season 2 Episode 4 – “The Dark Tower”

Okay, wow. Sorry, trying to find more ways to express my bewilderment than just the same ways I have been doing. This was an episode. I know I straight up just locked in on my post about Episode 4 of Victoria of Many Faces, which even I can’t tell you what about that episode in particular just made me strap myself down and write. Gonna try and be a bit looser with this writeup, mainly because I don’t know how easily I can do two larger writeups back to back.

So, let’s just start by getting Alicia’s situation out of the way. While she’s now a small human(oid) in that other world, the real world now has a mouse dark beast in Alicia’s place. This is all because of that Book of Toah thing, as that Romain guy said that Alicia won’t be getting out of that other world unless he opens the book again, if I’m understanding the episode correctly.

Alicia herself was captured by that number 3 student (Andrew, I believe was his name?), and she’s been taken down to his garden, where it seems she’s supposed to serve as food for one of his plants. A scene where she got surrounded by spiders felt very similar to a scene I saw at the beginning of Episode 1 of this season, which is making me feel like this was where that scene was pulling back to, at least for Alicia’s part.

The more important part of this episode, however, is what Clevatess does. Once he notices that Alicia’s dark ichor has faded, and that her scent is leading to a dead end, which shouldn’t happen, even after death. He goes to that pink haired lady, following Alicia’s scent, managing to get in there while she was overthinking what to do next, and came up with the solution of “run away”. He shows off his true form to her to show he means business, and eventually decides to make his next move, leading into the other big scene from the first scene of episode 1, being Clevatess making the dark tower and being like “hey, I know you want this, so come get it!”, which has Pope Romain need to step in and tell the students who can’t resist his voice to head back inside and fall into a deep sleep, leaving only those who can resist to stand out, because God forbid that a dark beast steps onto holy land.

There’s also another scene in this episode involving one of the teachers and a character we met earlier in the story (I think?), but I’ll leave that for later. However, due to this anime being an adaptation of a still-publishing webtoon, I was curious: where exactly in the story did this episode leave off? From what I can tell, this cuts off at the end of Chapter 84. I’m not going to try and track every single cutoff, however, because I’ll admit, that’s a lot more effort than I’d feel comfortable putting in every single week. I just did it this time because I looked at the Webtoon page via web and was like “huh, a lot of these thumbnails look familiar. When even is the cutoff for this episode?”, and I got my answer.

Seriously such a cool episode, and it seems it’s setting the stage for something big. I hope this series doesn’t fumble the ball.
