…okay, I’m not even going to do the “Well, the subtitles/metadata title says (blank) but the Japanese text shows (blank)” thing for this post. Do you realize how many of these episodes I’ve had to be like “screw the subtitles/metadata, I’m going to stick closer to the Japanese text!” just because I want to be more accurate to the Japanese? Too many, man. So now, if you see how I format a title of this series, assume that all punctuation (or lack of) is meant to be reflective of the Japanese text instead of whatever punctuation that the subtitles and/or metadata shows.
We start the episode at the CUREtto Detective Agency, where the girls share one of Kurea’s treats. Because she remembers everything now, she knows exactly how to open that window. If you watch the series, you know exactly which window I’m talking about.
Anna then asks the big question: how did Kurea forget that she’s a detective?
If you paid close attention to the title of this episode, you already know the answer: Kurea wasn’t a detective. We don’t get the elaboration on why she wasn’t a detective, however, because we have a client come in. As it turns out, the cook at a local restaurant went missing two days ago. This exact restaurant is called Princess Albert, a restaurant with famous stew.
Anna and Mikuru do their usual questioning. With it also establishing the date this episode takes place on, being the 20th. Meaning…it’s the literal day after the big events with the prophecy that caused the return of Cure Eclair. Okay, fine, fine.
Kurea herself also asks a question, which serves to confirm that the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
They also talk to the coworkers of the chef, with Kurea basically leading the talks. They learn that the missing cook had no issues with the job, that payday is on the 25th (like Kurea!), and that he did something odd on the day that he disappeared.
Our meitantei team goes outside to piece things together, with Kurea remarking that what they had discovered was similar to a novel that stars Hercule Poirot. We then get a Shushutan Quiz Show, which asks what country Poirot worked in.
I said London, like an idiot, because I forgot that London isn’t a country.
Anna herself said France.
The correct answer is England.
…at least I was close? London is in England.
Mikuru is also familiar with this novel, and the two give a recap of some of the case from that book, but when Anna asks for more…
Shushutan is not talking to Anna here. Shushutan is talking to us. Does Shushutan know we exist?
Anyway, remember when Kurea revealed that she wasn’t ever a detective? We find out why: Luluka personally took Kurea in as an assistant. She also insists for Anna and Mikuru to not treat her as a senior, since they have seniority over her. They still end up defaulting to calling her “ma’am”, though.
There’s a scene at the Phantom Thieves’ Guild, which is mainly just Usonoir sulking (and seemingly still in charge despite the implications of Luluka taking over last episode), and the revelation that Nijee is out searching for a Makoto Jewel. Usonoir is also like “ah, this must be based on the old calendar!”, though based on how Luluka and Mashutan react, that seems to not be the case. I guess it also establishes that Usonoir doesn’t remember what happened after becoming that monster thing, but I don’t think it’s going to play a big part in the plot.
Anyway, our meitanteis go to the cook’s residence, as Anna managed to get the address, where we see the cook exit the residence with a suitcase.
Technically a spoiler, but I feel like the answer to this case is obvious enough at this point: Nijee’s the cook, and the suitcase is the item that has a Makoto Jewel. We have the standard fight, now with Cure Eclair on the team, and Cure Eclair delivering the finisher.
I was willing to accept Cure Eclair having the finisher last episode, because it’s her present day debut. I also understand that this is a preschool show and that they likely need to have Cure Eclair do cool stuff a bit to really make it clear that she’s part of the crew, but I was really hoping for Answer and Mystique to have the finisher alongside Eclair.
I know that at this point the big plot developments are going to be around Eclair, but I fear that Anna and Mikuru are going to get overshadowed. It’s a shame, because I really want to learn more about them and their lives. There are still plenty of episodes to go in this series, but I really hope that Anna and Mikuru get more episodes to develop.
Anyway, the actual cook comes back, and then we get the official reveal of something I had already established — the time the Makoto Jewel got shattered was the first time that Kurea transformed — as well as an additional bit of trivia: the reason that Kurea lost her memories was because she lost her Makoto Jewel. With the fact that this was brought up, I highly believe that it isn’t just for this episode.
With next episode though…wooh, no spoilers, but based on both the age of a character debuting in the next episode and how they act, Nijee might have some competition for “antagonist that I may or may not have feelings past platonic for”. It just all depends on next week…
