Meitantei Precure Episode 39 – “An Ojamajo Halloween!”

Okay, yeah, you guys are getting the crossover illustration for this episode. I used the crossover illustration instead of the main illustration for the Detective Conan crossover, it’d be hypocritical for me to not use the crossover illustration for for the Ojamajo Doremi crossover. Now, I will be upfront and say that my knowledge of how Ojamajo Doremi works is limited to what’s revealed in this episode, my understanding of how things were revealed, and a little bit of reading of the Wikipedia page for the series. If I’m misunderstanding anything, then my apologies.

Also, I will note that, yes, I made a change in the punctuation of the translation of this episode’s title, but that’s only to make it similar to how the original Japanese title. Yeah, I wasn’t willing to go find a music note to copy and paste in the title, so you’re getting an exclamation point instead. Fight me.

Alrighty, let’s cover the episode now.

It’s Halloween, and after Jett used his Pretty Smile power to make an extra strong Pre-Kit Gloss for each of the girls, which he planned on delivering to them…only for him to find that the girls are already in costume, with costumes they made themselves, dressing up as things that would be considered fitting for the spooky season. As it turns out, they’re going to be going to the shopping arcade to help out with a Halloween event!

We have scenes of the girls helping out, as well as seeing what some side characters in the series wear as costumes. Of course, there is a time where there is a bit of a split in the group, with Kurea and Luluka having their own priorities they needed to get to. I will say that this also involved Kurea changing her costume from the one she was wearing for that other priority, and the costume she wore beforehand never returns. Now, I think I understand why Kurea would’ve needed to change her costume when it boils down to where specifically she went, but I wish that would’ve gotten acknowledged somehow.

Also, Agesiene is here, and in her first scene she doesn’t even bother to put on a disguise. Though, to be fair, it’s Halloween, so people probably think she’s just in costume instead of this being her everyday look. While she initially gets distracted by the prospect of sweet treats, she remembers she has a Makoto Jewel to steal.

Anyway, Anna and Mikuru later come across a little girl who got separated from her mother. While the detectives find the girl’s mother, unfortunately, she’s stuck with a crying baby that won’t stop crying elsewhere, meaning that it’d be difficult for her to come back. So instead, our detectives decide to go trick or treating with the girl.

This girl’s costume is of the character Doremi Harukaze from Ojamajo Doremi, which is a fictional series in the world of Meitantei Precure. You know, just as a reminder that this series takes place in 1999, meaning that yes, the Anna time travel did happen. Her prop is a broom that she made with her mom, with her wishing to be able to ride on it like Doremi does in the show. This episode also shows that the fairies are fans of Ojamajo Doremi.

Anyway, they later come across a woman who offers to trade brooms with the girl, which the girl agrees to. As it turns out, however, this woman is none other but Agesiene in disguise. She makes off with the broom, and while our detectives try and follow her, Agesiene’s footprints end without any clear sign as to where she went. This is where the Pre-Kit Lip Glosses from earlier in the episode come into play, being promised to provide a long and realistic transformation (likely just the writers coming up with a reason to have the transformations in this episode last as long as they do), with the girls using them to transform into versions of the characters from the series. In order:

  • Anna becomes Doremi Harukaze
  • Mikuru becomes Hazuki Fujiwara
  • Kurea becomes Aiko Senoo
  • and Luluka becomes Onpu Segawa

Note that this is mainly just based on outfits, powers, and heights, as when it comes to the rest of their looks, they’re still just themselves. Based on my readings on these specific characters, they make sense. Probably the only complaint I have is that Anna and Mikuru’s colors don’t feel like they cleanly line up with their theme colors (Anna has Mikuru’s theme color and Mikuru introduces a completely new color into the team), and while I can excuse Anna’s as “main character replicating main character”, I feel like Mikuru becoming Hazuki was decided on because of the whole “miraculous duo” thing. But like, these characters are likely to be the most recognizable out of the cast, so it makes sense for these to be the characters they become, especially when comparing Luluka and Onpu’s stories. (Or, at least, what of Onpu’s story I can get from the Wikipedia page.)

This is where we really get into the Ojomajo Doremi stuff, as the girls get instructed on how specifically each one should ride on their broom to fly it. Yeah, they get to summon brooms they can fly on. While they’re able to follow Agesiene with these brooms, Mashutan’s instruction for Anna to use magic…however, as it turns out, Anna needs a specific power source to be able to use magic, and she doesn’t have it.

Anyway, eventually, they all land, Hanninda gets formed, and the transformation occurs, standard fight occurs. Honestly, if you’ve seen one fight in this show, it almost feels like you’ve seen them all just with a different mechanic that the Cures need to figure out. Group finisher showing that teamwork makes the dream work, Makoto Jewel retrieved, and…wait, something new?!

Yeah, Anna and the others get that thing that allows them to use the Ojamajo Doremi magic, and they use it to have the dream of that girl come true, allowing her to fly on a broom. She asks if the four are really witches, to which they’re like “It’s a secret!” Honestly, they’re lucky they’re not actually witches, because from my research, if they were actually witches something bad would’ve happened if they revealed themselves.

Okay, I need to rant. As a Detective Conan fan: how come Conan gets to be flesh and blood in the world of Meitantei Precure, but Ojamajo Doremi is just a show in the world of Meitantei Precure?! Considering that the world of Detective Conan is based more on being realistic and the world of Ojamajo Doremi is more open to magic, you’d think that you’d have Detective Conan be the show and Ojamajo Doremi be flesh and blood, but apparently that can’t be it! Prior to the announcement of this episode being a crossover (of sorts), I was fine with Detective Conan characters in the world of Meitantei Precure because 1) I freaking love Detective Conan and 2) there were no signs of Meitantei Precure doing another crossover in the main series with a non-Precure property. But now? I see no reason why the reality setup for these two non-Precure properties couldn’t have been swapped aside from “it was already set in stone”.

And honestly, despite this episode feeling like the Detective Conan half of the Detective Conan and Meitantei Precure crossover but if the members of the Detective Conan team were given permission to have actual magic in the episode, I don’t feel as enamored by this episode compared to the other episode I mentioned. Yes, our Cures were able to use the powers that their respective characters have in Ojamajo Doremi…but with how it’s set up, it feels like that would’ve happened regardless of what (fictional or otherwise) magical girl they became. I will admit that I can’t think of any magical girls that would’ve been able to properly chase down Agesiene in the air, so their usage of Ojamajo Doremi is justified in that regard, but who knows, maybe I don’t fully understand this episode because I’ve never seen an episode of Ojamajo Doremi myself, thus having me not be seen as the “intended audience” for this specific episode.

The next episode follows the same name scheme as last week’s episode, which gives me the feeling we’ll see another light on that brooch light up. Notice how I specifically said the next episode, not next week’s episode. That’s because Meitantei Precure is taking next week off, and I think it’s likely because Halloween is on Saturday. Since Meitantei Precure airs on Sunday morning in Japan, the target audience may be too tired from trick or treating the night before to be able to tune in to the next episode.

Under usual circumstances, I would’ve had to scramble to figure out something to post to fill the hole next week. This time, however? Well…
