It’s hard to think of a good pre-writeup thing for this when I’m spending my time listening to the most recent opening theme of another show that I watch that releases on Saturdays. But hey, what can I say? I really love that show and the song, and that love’s fire.
Anyway, time to actually start this.
The episode starts with a recap of part of the first episode, detailing how the egg that became the Cat Dragon was laid, the egg hatching when the momma cat is raising her kits, and even the detail of the momma cat being summoned away, also noting down that the Cat Dragon chooses to stay at the cave to help protect the cats. I know that the Crunchyroll synopsis officially calls him “Dragon”, but I think the Cat Dragon or just Cat Dragon is cooler than just saying Dragon.
Anyway, this episode gives us a good look at what Cat Dragon does to help raise kittens when it’s that time, by seeing two couples arrive. After finding out that one of them was injured by humans, however, Cat Dragon flies out to where those humans were. Seeing cats there attacking the humans, however, Cat Dragon berates them for prioritizing the humans over the injured cat.
When the Cat Dragon makes it back to the cave, however, it turns out that one of the cats used healing magic on the injured cat…causing both pregnant cats to break their water prematurely. The Cat Dragon handles this well, however, and the kits appear to be born without any issue. One of the kits just loves Cat Dragon’s claws.
We do get to see the kits watch their older siblings go off, as the kits learn magic and how to hunt and even get to become the older siblings themselves. During their learning of how to hunt, they come across three humans who are fighting beasts in the forest, and the kit that loves Cat Dragon’s claws is just like “woah, that mage is so cool! :o”
The most insane part is that after the first set of kits leave, the kits that were born prematurely were like “we gotta catch one of those!” and end up catching an entire bear, which they get berated for.
Eventually, though, they do grow up and need to leave the nest. Some of them choose to stay in the forest, some of them choose to head off into the human world…and then the one who really liked Cat Dragon’s claws and was basically starstruck by the human mage was like “I’m going to become a human adventurer!”, even having a human form to change into. I find it cool that the design for the human form has a low ponytail. It kind of looks like a tail!
Anyway, they head out, and while there’s more to their stories, that’s another story for another day.
Really loved this episode. While there were some moments where I was like “they better not do [blank]”, I’m glad that whatever I thought up of to fill in that blank never came to fruition. As someone who had a Warrior Cats phase throughout my later elementary school years and my middle school years, the way that the cats in the forest act really remind me of those books.
…am I allowed to still say it’s a phase if I play Clangen? I know it’s not official in any capacity, but it literally bases itself on the Warrior Cats books with what it does.
*ahem*
I’ll still be proceeding forward with watching this series. It’s officially won me over. Can’t wait to see how stories collide from here.
