Clevatess Season 2 Episode 2 – “Another World”

“Could you hold on a minute before you continue?”
CONTENT WARNING: Spoilers for Clevatess Season 2 Episode 2, and content that may be triggering to some audiences. Unfortunately, I am not confident myself in how to label it, though I can confirm it does involve blood. If you don’t feel comfortable engaging with potentially triggering content, please don’t proceed with this writeup.

I had delayed this post by 24 hours because when I finally had the time and the space to comfortably watch this episode, already enough had happened to push my personal feelings over the edge, and I just wanted to wait until I was in a better mood to watch the episode and do the writeup. As it turns out, that move was actually 100% justified by the episode, because I feel like if I tried to do the writeup that day, I would’ve added so much unneeded salt that you guys likely would’ve raised your eyebrows and asked if something had happened to cause me to add all of that salt. This was certainly an episode that I needed to be in a better mood than I was the other day to be able to let this episode fully sink in. May as well just start the writeup so that you guys finally understand what I’m getting at.

The episode starts with the transfer students getting introduced to the class. While Clevatess continues to use the human name of Klen he has been using since he began taking up the human form, though Alicia uses Alyssa as her name here to hide her identity. One of the characters we saw in the previous episode also notices Clevatess and is like “oh, I’m not the only horned person here!”

Now, I don’t know if that character is naturally horned or if they’re like Clevatess. I’ll keep watching the series to see if we find out more about this specific character, but I doubt that we’re going to see a trait be shared across two different characters that doesn’t have any sort of bigger meaning.

Anyway, the transfer students are in the fifth year, if I was understanding what was being laid down correctly.

We also get to see the students do practicals, which introduces us to yet another kind of magic: wand magic! The wand serves as an amplifier, allowing even those with minimal magical resonance whatever to do magic, as long as they’re skilled. And to test, the practical involves lighting a lantern without opening the door to it.

Out of everyone who got to try their magic during the time outside, four people failed (even if I’m only counting one by technicality): Alicia, because the magic didn’t seem to react, the asshole twins because they did it together and broke the fucking thing, and Clevatess after doing it on his own in the air probably because his power is too strong for a wand to handle.

Of course, we do learn that your placement at school is based on your magic strength, because after Alicia fails, one of the other students, Nathan opens up about his struggles with magic. This was where I began getting attached to Nathan. This is where I made a mistake this episode.

We get to see the performances of some of the other students, being Mary Merryweather, Andrew Hwyp, and of course, Ray. Please Ray, don’t end up being a bad guy. You’re cool.

But, yeah, like I brought up earlier, the asshole twins push Nathan out of the way and try to do the practical together, only to blow the lantern up. This was the absolute peak of the episode for me before I had to sit through one of the most grueling sequences that I’ve ever seen in this anime until now. Yes, I’m going as far as to say that what’s coming is worse than Nelluru’s backstory.

At this point is when we also get Clevatess trying to do a spell and breaking a wand. I still think the asshole twins blowing the lantern up was the higher point of this episode, mainly because I didn’t expect them to do that together. Since we already know how strong Clevatess is, him breaking a wand was expected.

Nathan then heads to a separate part of the school, and we witness a man…uh…

A man facing backwards. Subtitles say "Lost lambs, pray to your God."
A closeup of a book. Subtitles say "Now, confess your sins."
If I’m being 100% honest, this is the entire reason why I’m so uncertain as to how to attach content warnings for this post.

…we see this. Due to how little focus this specific thing gets in the episode, I’m not sure yet how to describe it. It’s certainly meant to evoke an image of religion of some kind due to the person referring to someone astray as a “lost lamb”, the asking of prayer to “your God”, and the request for one to confess sins, which would all be directed at Nathan. However, as this specific group hasn’t had much screen time, I cannot say if this is because it’s a cult or if there’s a secondary reason for all of this. And as my image caption says, this entire sequence is why I’m so unsure as to how to categorize this at this time.

However, the next day, we find out that Nathan is absent, and when Alicia voices concerns about his absence, Mary’s like “well, do you know anything about it?”, and when Alicia says no, Mary does a little spiel to describe her job as class rep, and Mary chooses to go look for Nathan. Alicia joins Mary, while Clevatess and two of the other characters decide to walk together.

Alicia and Mary arrive at Nathan’s dorm and knock to ask to come in. After getting no response, however, Alicia breaks down the door to see the room is a (and please pardon my language) fucking mess.

MAJOR BLOOD WARNING! I do not feel comfortable just leaving this image in plain view, due to how much blood is left uncensored. There is no holy light of God to spare us from the details of the blood.
A bloody room that had its door kicked down. A book is face down on the ground and a rabbit head is near the wall.

Alicia then jumps out of a second story window and runs out into the forest, with Mary being like “what’s her deal?”.

Anyway, we’re 15 minutes into the episode, and we finally get our first explicit look at…well, another world. It’s much more worn down than the real world, and since we see Nathan there, it’s clear that whatever occurred in that area is connected to this somehow. I’m positive we’ll piece everything about this together as the story proceeds.

And Nathan looks like he’s terrified! I was continuing to get attached! I was still making that mistake! But it seems that the reason that Nathan had gone down there was to get a Crest. I am…not going to question things at the moment. There’s still plenty of episodes to clarify what the hell’s happening. Maybe it’s a puzzle we’re supposed to solve!

A salamander looking thing comes up and brings up remembering the memories of Toah and Nathan’s own desires. Nathan also gets asked to entrust everything to the power of Toah, which makes it feel like Toah is the name of the higher being in whatever Nathan confided in is.

We also see these creatures that look…wrong. As they’re calling out for Nathan, it seems that it’s someone looking for Nathan in the real world. Now, you may be wondering, what does Nathan look like in the real world?

He’s a big monkey thing that’s on the prowl in the forest. The asshole twins are the ones to find it first, and engage in battle with it. When it feels like their methods fail, however, Alicia jumps in to save the day. Since she doesn’t have her favored weapon of choice (a sword), she tries asking Clevatess to get her one, but he straight up ignores her.

The monkey lets out a screech that includes human speech that’s also rather damaging. Back in the other world, the salamander tells Nathan to kill the monsters in front of him (who are actually his classmates) otherwise they’ll kill him. Since the twins and Alicia are still able to fight back and Nathan seems to be losing the will to, the salamander is like “this one won’t do” and declares Nathan to have failed.

In the real world, the aura of the monkey changes and it begins to act more animalistic. Thankfully, Mary comes in and uses the power of her crest to force the monkey to be calm, with it eventually turning back into Nathan’s human form. This does, however, have a consequence: while he keeps his human form, he loses his memories of the past few years as well as losing access to magic.

And just like how Nathan loses his access to magic, I’ve lost my hope that he’ll be plot relevant after this episode. Man, I really hope that Ray and Mary don’t end up going down this path. At the very least, they’re present on the key art that I’m using for my posts, and they’re both present on a more up-to-date key art, so I’m hoping that means that they play a key role in this season. If they don’t, I’ll be heavily disappointed.

Honestly very interested in the rest of this season. I want answers to what’s happening with that thing that feels like a cult and the other world! And I can only get those answers if I keep on watching! Again, Ray, Mary, don’t go down the path of evil. Please. I already lost one blorbo, I don’t wanna lose more. :[
