Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp Episode 3 – “The Lady Saint”

The episode begins with Elise getting assigned to her mentor at the hospital where she’s going to be working. Here it’s revealed that Elise has chosen to go under the pseudonym Rose, to hide her identity, as she feels that going with her actual identity would cause her to get different treatment from the others in the hospital because of the fact that she’s from the deClorence family. One of Elise’s brothers says that he’s going to sneak in from time to time to check in on Elise. Whether or not this does happen will likely be revealed in future episodes.

Elise then arrives at Teresa Hospital, where she arrives on time for her meeting with Graham, the person who will be her mentor. She gets assigned to the ward where the patients without families and those with severe illnesses, that the hospital has deemed to be greater than the aid they can provide. Elise is left there, and decides to begin taking steps to improve the area. She begins by cleaning the area, as a clean area for the patients to stay will help to keep more of them alive. At first Elise does it by herself, but after the helpers in the area notice how much work it’s going to take, they choose to help her out.

As the cleaning finishes, however, one of the patients begins to experience pain. One of the other patients says that the patient in pain broke a rib, but Elise observes his body and notices that he has bedsores. She chooses to do surgery for the man, which the nurses are worried about at first, but as the surgery progresses, it’s clear to the nurses that Elise knows what she’s doing. When they’re back in the ward, and the other patients see that the guy with the bedsores is feeling better, they insist that Elise treats them next, some people saying that the illnesses of the others are mere scratches compared to what they’re dealing with. The others who work in the ward decide to help her as much as they can.

Meanwhile, a doctor checks on the emperor. This doctor, regarded as the best doctor in the empire, is unable to identify the emperor’s illness at first, but after the crown prince provides the tip that Elise provided in the previous episode, the doctor goes to check what information he has on the disease. The fact that Elise was the one who provided the information, however, was kept secret. After some discussion about the Kusef campaign, we go back to the hospital, where Graham and sees how clean the area is. He finds Elise and goes to wake her up, but the patients point out that she hasn’t slept at all because she was busy treating them. Talks continue going on until Graham finds out that Elise did a surgery, and when she wakes up, asked which doctor helped her. When she says she did it on her own, Graham doesn’t believe her until the patient she did surgery on says that she did.

Later, Graham and Elise meet, and Graham admits that he underestimated Elise’s abilities, and decides to take having her be his apprentice seriously. The doctor that checked on the emperor also figures out that what the emperor is dealing with is diabetes, and created a treatment plan.

This episode was very interesting. There appears to be more modern equipment for this area, though it appears that the medical knowledge at this time isn’t the same as modern day. I can’t wait to see where the story ends up going from here! This feels like a somewhat feel-good show, but I’m not being quick to fully say that it’s like that for me. I’m going to wait to see how the tone is shaped throughout the rest of the season.
