Meitantei Precure Episode 14 – “Pochitan’s First Outing!”

Well, looks like that now I have the title of the next episode written down, I now have no excuse to refuse to use Cure Arcana Shadow’s real name. So just know that, unless context deems otherwise, any time I used “Arcana Shadow” in a writeup, I was talking about Luluka Moria. Okay, now I’ll talk about the actual episode.

Anna and Mikuru are walking to school as per usual, now with a Pochitan that can talk simpler words in tow. As it turns out, however, due to people seeing Pochitan as a pouch, the student council president that usually stands by the gate, Rei, points out that students should only be bringing the designated schoolbags unless they’ve been given prior permission to bring an outside bag.

So, to combat this, Anna and Mikuru leave Pochitan at the CUREtto Detective Agency the next school day, leaving Jett in charge of the Space Time Fairy. I believe that’s what Pochitan is. Someone correct me if I’m incorrect. Please.

And during the time where Pochitan’s left at the agency, the letter from the CUREtto Detective Agency’s London branch arrived. Jett decides to wait to open it until Anna and Mikuru return from school, but Pochitan decides to grab a letter and fly out of the agency to find Anna and Mikuru during the small bit of time Jett took his eyes off of Pochitan due to someone inquiring if Pretty Holic was open.

Pochitan does end up going on a bit of an adventure, however, when it gets distracted by birds (or as Pochitan calls them, “tweet tweet”s) flying by. Also, there was a dog involved in there somewhere? Forgot exactly where.

Pochitan ends up listening in to Rei reading a story at a library, which Rei notices after the story, and Pochitan speaks to reveal that Pochitan isn’t just a pouch. It’s a fairy.

…someone remind me to never write in that structure again.

Meanwhile with the Phantom Thieves’ Guild, the fact that the letter from the London CUREtto Detective Agency exists is known to them, and Mashutan (Luluka’s fairy friend, in case I haven’t established that already) does the fortune telling thing to reveal that the letter contains a secret that Luluka doesn’t want to get out. Uh oh!

Nijee, however, is the one assigned to go after the next Makoto Jewel. Yippee! I always love Nijee episodes, he’s been the only one of these guys to grip me from their very first appearance. I love him. Platonically, of course.

Anyway, after Anna and Mikuru find out that Pochitan has disappeared, they use their detective tools to look for it. They use the Mirror Loupe and the thing that lets them talk to animals to get the clues that lead them to where Pochitan and Rei are.

Pretty much here they talk to Rei, Nijee and Luluka come in, Rei’s badge thing forms a Makoto Jewel, that gets used as a Hanninda, transformations, fight…

Okay, pause my bare bones breakdown for the time being. I need to talk about the fight. In this episode, we get to see Cure Answer do a new attack with her PreKit Mirror Loupe. And just like when the solo attacks first popped up, we had no hints in universe beforehand that they were learning these attacks. Like, this new attack would’ve been so much more impactful if Mystique was knocked down, her PreKit Mirror Loupe out of her grabbing range, and Answer trying to figure out how she’s going to purify the Hanninda. Then a voice in her mind leads her with the solo attack, bada bing bada boom.

I know this is a show intended for children. But it’s almost feels like this show is afraid to have Answer and Mystique seem like they don’t have the answer to a solution when it’s not connected to the main mystery. Also, one of if not my first magical girl series was Sailor Moon, and if I recall correctly, that series let the girls panic and not know what to do when in magical girl form on occasion. Why can’t we let Answer and Mystique have those same reactions?

Anyway, after the fight and Anna and Mikuru detransforming, Rei says that she’s willing to help Anna and Mikuru talk to get permission to get Pochitan to school due to Rei knowing that Anna and Mikuru are detectives and that Pochitan is likely a member of their crew. Hopefully this goes well. Also, Luluka and Mashutan open the letter they got from Pochitan…though what they actually grabbed is a funny plot twist.

At this point, while Meitantei Precure has good messages, it seems like it’s only getting them through because they only show a minimal amount of scenes that show Anna and Mikuru not having the answer. I really wish we got more of those scenes, as it would really help them feel less like cardboard cutouts meant to fulfill specific roles, and more like people you’d interact with in the real world.

This episode definitely feels like the calm before the storm. And unless I’m mistaken, the next episode is the storm.
