Just like with last week’s episode, this week’s episode had a sort of multi-story vignette style. Unlike episode 1, however, each vignette has its own title instead of all being under the same title. As a result, this review will focus on each vignette separately. Here we go.
Invisible Things Aren’t Scary
Kaya and her class consistently walk past the same building during their school day, with one of her classmates noticing what she thinks to be a ghost in the window. Kaya opts to believe her classmate, however, and decides to look at that area as well, for Kaya to see a real ghost.
This story was a nice way to lead into the episode, even if the post-credits scene took a turn and revealed that there was also a human explanation to what Kaya and her classmate were seeing in this section of the episode. Honestly, this made me excited to see the rest of the episode. I feel like it set a good vibe.
Parks Aren’t Scary and Strangers Aren’t Scary?
The staff members begin by reviewing a suspicious person report, though ultimately deciding to continue with the trip, despite rumors of children disappearing and stating they’ve been with their parents the whole time once they return.
Kaya and her class are at the park, with the instructors letting them know to not leave their sight. One of Kaya’s classmates heard her mother calling her, however, so they run off, causing Kaya to follow them. As it turns out, the person who was calling out to Kaya’s classmate wasn’t their mom, and Kaya beats them up, though with when Chie came in, she came to the incorrect conclusion that it was a grown man trying to whisk the kids away.
Keep your pins in that grown man thing. We’ll return to it later.
I decided to pair “Parks Aren’t Scary” and “Strangers Aren’t Scary?” together because it feels like “Strangers Aren’t Scary?” can’t happen without the events of “Parks Aren’t Scary”.
Due to the events of “Parks Aren’t Scary”, Chie decides to let Kaya borrow a pull string alarm, saying for her to use it when strangers talk to her, pointing out that bad people will run away and good people won’t. Kaya, of course, activates it right there in the classroom, much to the annoyance of Chie.
Later, Kaya’s father comes to pick her up while she’s playing in the playground, claiming that he’s in a hurry and wants to take a shortcut, so Kaya jumps the fence to join him.
But when she passes the entrance and sees her actual father, however, she realizes that the “father” she was walking with is actually a ghost, and more specifically, is the same (or at least similar to the) ghost that was from “Parks Aren’t Scary”.
This ghost also tries to take the form of Kaya’s mother, but the man from earlier uses a spray on it to give Kaya an opening to get rid of it. We also get to see Kaya use the alarm in its proper setting and use the logic that Chie herself brought up. Yay!
But who is that guy? While an answer is provided in this episode, I’m gonna have you guys watch the episode. Or wait until next week to read my writeup of the next episode. Depends on how Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary plays its cards.
I’m still really enjoying the series in Episode 2, and it’s just been a nice way for me to just have a bit of a laugh though still keeping a sort of darker undertone that I enjoy in media from time to time. While next episode could ultimately break my decision, I’ll likely stick with Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary for the remainder of this anime season.
