Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary Episode 4 – “Lost Kids Aren’t Scary/Dolls Aren’t Scary/Home Visits Aren’t Scary?”

Another Sunday, another episode of Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary! Yippee!! 😀 Time for me to talk about this week’s episode of Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary! Yay!

As per usual (aka since Episode 2), my writeups will be split based on the sections in the episode. So now, let’sa go! Starting with…

Lost Kids Aren’t Scary

Kaya’s father picks up Kaya from school, with the viewer finding out that tomorrow is when Chie will be doing a home visit to Kaya’s place. While Kaya and her father are walking, a public safety announcement is played to alert that the police need help to find an elementary school child that had been reported as missing, with Kaya’s father also reporting that a man had been reported as missing.

Kaya and her father see the elementary schooler coming in their direction, and Kaya’s father offers to take her to the police station. While she seems to be willing to at first, she later runs off. We also follow the girl as she runs away, getting into the dead end and thinks it’s the end, as she feels like she’s being followed.

At first, it seems like it’s set up that the only thing following the girl is Kaya. However, there was something else that was a ghost, and Kaya beats up the ghost. Kaya and her father help the girl reunite with her mother, and the girl tells her mother that she needs to tell her something. There’s also an ending scene that seems to suggest that what she told was connected to that (which also involves the man I brought up earlier), but I’ll wait until later to see if that framing was actually correct, or if it was just really poor timing.

This was more of a serious section of the episode, but considering the final section of this episode, it’s something that may have been needed to help set the tone of it, even if we have the section in between. I still enjoyed it, but now it’s time for…

Dolls Aren’t Scary

Due to another kindergarten closing down, one of the teachers at Kaya’s kindergarten managed to rescue the toys before they could get thrown out. While the kids get a chance to look at them, it’s stated that they’ll start being able to play with them tomorrow.

Of course, not all of the kids were intent with “waiting until tomorrow”, and three kids sneak into the room to look at the toys. While one of the kids among these three initially is hesitant to interact with these toys at first, seeing a doll toy within the toy chest thing that seems like its seen better days also appears to change this kid’s mind.

When the kid begins doing actions to make them look more like the doll (ripping off part of her shirt sleeve, trying to cut her hair short, ripping out one of her teeth to make her mouth look more red), to the point where her friends are getting concerned. Kaya realizes what’s happening, though, and exorcises the ghost in the doll, as well as throws the doll out.

This is a fun section of the episode, and while I kept details more on the low side, I still think it was a nice way to bridge the gap between the previous section and the next one.

Home Visits Aren’t Scary?

The day of the home visit is finally here! At first, Kaya doesn’t allow Chie to enter her house to talk to her mom, but Chie gets in anyway. The most interesting part is how Kaya’s mom is portrayed in this episode. We get to see her both from Kaya’s eyes (more of a specter) and Chie’s eyes (normal). However, there’s an interesting reason provided in universe to explain why this is the case. However, I don’t think I can really talk about it without spoiling too much that I think is better left unstated for now. Honestly, I’m excited to see whether the “Kaya’s mom” thing develops further from here or not.

Honestly, I’m happy to be able to keep following this series. This is such a cute series (even with the horror elements), and I’m excited to see where it goes next.
