Man, I really wished that we got to keep the streak of having only two sections per episode going. Not to say that having three sections isn’t a bad thing, but it really feels like each segment has more room to breathe when there’s only two per episode compared to three per episode. Who knows, maybe I’m biased because I’m more used to episodes of other shows that do this “multiple segments in one episode” thing only doing two segments instead of one, but…whatever. Let’s just get this writeup started.
Prior to the opening theme, there’s a scene of Kaya finding out that her mom is pregnant, and that she’s going to become a big sister. I want to assume that this scene takes place prior to the events of the series, but I’m unsure of that myself. Look, maybe the passage of time is explained better in the manga, but at least for me, the time passage was more unclear in this regard.
Hospitals Aren’t Scary
Based on events that occur later in the episode, I think it’s safe to assume that this section of the episode takes place in the present. Anyway, Kaya’s mom has to go to the hospital for a medical procedure, with Kaya being with her father and being given a book to distract her from the adult talk that’s happening. As it turns out, Kaya’s mom will have to stay in the hospital overnight. So, Kaya’s dad goes back to the house to get supplies for Kaya’s mom.
Kaya gets to stay in a daycare room in the hospital, and partway through play, she asks to go to the bathroom. She does actually go to the bathroom…though we also get to see a scene of a woman panicking and looking for her baby, with her even pressing the button to call for a nurse. Kaya overhears the nurses talking about what to do, and then Kaya sees…
…that. Genuinely, I think I said enough about how it looks in the caption. But Kaya follows it, to see that it has entered a room, with the lady from earlier being surrounded by these things. Kaya takes it upon herself to get rid of each of them, and help the lady find her baby. But when a staff member comes in, it’s revealed that there wasn’t anyone there at all.
We got flashes before this point of a patient failing in surgery, and this lady was that patient, who had died. And, like…that was a way to start the episode. That baby’s likely going to be stuck in my head for the next several hours. I’ve never said that about this show before. You can take that as either a compliment or a complaint. I don’t know which it’s supposed to be myself.
We also see Kaya’s dad arranging with someone to take care of Kaya while he’s out, likely to keep an eye on Kaya’s mother. And it’s just…ugh, my heart! </3 This was…something! Um…
It was a rather strong start, and I think it connects nicely back to the final segment. But first…
Playground Equipment Isn’t Scary
This section takes us to the kindergarteners going to a park, where one of Kaya’s classmates wants to play with Kaya on one of the pieces of equipment…only to find that it’s gone. Because of that, however, she takes them to the slide instead, where a group of boys decide to run past them.
Kaya’s friend tells them that they need to follow the rules and that she’s going to tell the teacher…but she gets cut off. Kaya beats up the ghost that was seemingly plugging her friend, but it seems like the damage was already done, as now her friend has an idea to break a rule. And, uh…
Yeah, that face exists. This is why we shouldn’t put faces on the things that tell us what not to do. Especially if they look happy. This face is just fucking creepy, I swear to god.
Anyway, Kaya’s friend goes to do her rulebreaking idea as the boys do theirs, and the two end up crashing, alerting one of the teachers and having a talking too regarding how what they did is bad. It’s a more lighthearted section, but it’s necessary for the next part of the story, and I still enjoyed it. Which means that it’s about time I cover the last section…
Staying Home Alone Isn’t Scary?
Due to the events of “The Hospital Isn’t Scary”, Kaya needs someone to watch over her, and that comes in the form of her auntie Nana! During the walk home, Nana instructs Kaya not to look at the spirits, as that feeds them. But Kaya’s strong enough to not need to follow that, as she can pack a punch.
Nana’s come to check up on something in the upstairs room, leaving Kaya to watch some TV. During the stay, there are three “people” who come to visit. Nana actually stops the first “person” due to conflicting information between what the “person” told her and what information she had, informing Kaya to not let anyone in, and Nana even applied a charm thing that should be keeping the spirits out…even if Kaya’s lower level knowledge of spirits doesn’t exactly know that.
The second “person” that visits the house gets turned away by Kaya, as they didn’t refer to her in the way the actual person usually does. But it’s the third “person” who causes Kaya to open the door, because she thought that the “person” she was talking to was telling the truth due to not knowing as much about them. This is the point where I was hoping Nana was going to become Kaya’s teacher, as Kaya opened the door for a spirit pretending to be Nana.
While Nana has to come down herself to add some of those charm things on the spirit, Kaya does a punch to get rid of it for good. There’s also a scene where a young man hangs up a call from Chie that’s intended for Mob, but I’m going to wait to see if he comes back later.
Look, I’ve only seen that guy in small scenes in previous episodes, as well as the opening and ending animation. Do you really think that I know enough about him to make a solid deduction about what his purposes are?!
But still, I’ve been really enjoying the series so far! I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here, as it seems to be going in a pretty interesting direction!
