I have the feeling that I was the only one who saw last week’s episode and thought that every episode would be over thirty minutes long. Of course, I can understand why last week’s episode needed to be so long. However, seeing this week’s episode is more of a standard length makes me think that this will be the typical length of episodes, which is to be expected for anime. Either way, I’ll just get into it.
The episode basically begins where Episode 1 left off, with Goku and his friends getting shrunk. Of course, the “big” bad Gomah doesn’t get any additional wishes because getting three wishes is a special privilege for regulars who make wishes, not first-timers who just come to Earth for easy Dragon Balls. Shenron goes away, sending the Dragon Balls to random places worldwide. We see that Mr. Popo and Dende were both impacted by the wish, with Mr. Popo now being a child and Dende now being a baby. As the elderly Namekian cannot do what he did in the last episode again, Gomah makes the completely reasonable (to him) decision to kidnap Dende.
Meanwhile, back on Earth, everyone is processing that they’re small now. Everyone is surprised by the change. We also see members of the cast fail to recognize Roshi and Mr. Satan since they’re young now, and they’ve never seen him young. And let me just say that young Roshi scares me. He’s still bald. Why is he still bald?
At the very least, it appears that despite being babies now, Goten and Trunks can still communicate with each other. Also, since Goku and Vegeta were flying, they crash-landed. Trying to figure out what’s happening, the Z-Fighters head to where Mr. Popo stays, where they find out about Dende’s kidnapping. Finding out about this, Goku wants to go to the Demon Realm…just one issue. One does not simply teleport into the Demon Realm. Kibito gets the ship that he and Shin came in…but it’s broken, meaning Bulma has to make repairs.
Honestly, I feel bad for Kibito in this episode. He is just treated like a delivery boy.
During the episode, Goku also gets Nyoibo, which is in Roshi’s care and used for laundry. Good going, Roshi.
While Bulma is busy making the repairs, a plane/spaceship appears, bringing along Glorio, who already knows who Goku is and isn’t surprised that he’s small now. While Shin is hesitant, he and Goku go, with the other Z-Fighters staying on Earth until Shin’s ship is repaired (and since Bulma got references now, it won’t take as long). The episode ends as we see Glorio’s spaceship/plane head out.
Young Roshi will probably haunt my dreams tonight, and the only person I have to blame is myself.
But outside of the Young Roshi jumpscare, I really enjoyed this episode. While there was a tiny bit of a recap of the Buu saga to explain why Shin’s ship wasn’t functioning, there was a lot more new content compared to the recap. And it felt so weird seeing both the opening and ending themes have subtitles, as all the other shows I’m watching this season don’t do that.
Is this what happens when you get Zedd involved with the opening and ending? Or is this just one massive coincidence? Find out next time on Dragon Ball—
okay, I’m not going to make that joke. But next week, we’ll be stepping into the Demon Realm for a mystical adventure! That should be pretty easy to tell from how this week’s episode ended. And honestly, I’m excited to see where it ends up going!
