Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 16 – “Degesu”

…just…what do I say about this episode? There’s so much I want to say right now, but obviously, spoilers prevent me from doing so. Just…I’m just going to get into reviewing the episode so that I can cover that stuff.

We have the recap section that just covers Dragon Ball as a whole in this episode…for whatever reason. Guys, we’re getting closer to if we’re not already in the end game, can we hurry it up? We’re not One Piece, we don’t need to adapt the minimal amount of manga necessary for an episode to ensure the manga stays ahead. You can use this time to…oh, I don’t know, give us more time for the episode? According to the times of the themes on Spotify, we’re already taking up around two minutes and thirty-four seconds of the episode with the opening and ending themes, and it feels like at this point, every second should be used wisely. Now, I’m not saying “obliterate the opening and ending themes”, but if you gave me permission to obliterate anything…well…yeah, the recap sections before the themes in all episodes except the first would most likely be the first to go. The first episode gets an exception.

As for the actual episode, it begins with Goku and the others arriving at the palace after the assist from Panzy’s dad…only to be stopped by the silliest of all the sillies, the Gendarmerie Force. And due to me doing the whole “close enough, welcome back [blank]” sthick two weeks ago regarding the Gendarmerie Force and the Ginyu Force, I just want to make it clear that I actually get excited when we get to see the Gendarmerie force, compared to the Ginyu Force where I want them to just get off of the screen.

Anyway, after introducing themselves to Goku and the group, they still fight. While this fight does go by quickly, it’s understandable because these guys are clearly intended to be more on the silly side, proven by the fact that even after they are captured, Goku gets potato chips from them. They’re not a threat, but they’re still cool characters in my book.

Goku and the gang then traverse through the palace, needing to break down some areas to do so. When they sense Dende’s Ki while wandering, causing them to go after it…and find Degesu.

He would, in fact, hurt a child. And this image proves it, your honor.

This ends up turning into a bit of a fight that ends in victory because Glorio threw the hat that Hybis got last week. Good riddance, that hat was kinda ugly, if I’m going to be brutally honest. But with Degesu down and Dende back in the crew’s hands, the next step is simple…go find the Tamagami! And while they do get there, Panzy realizes that the Dragon Ball isn’t there…which is also when Arinsu, Kuu, and Duu enter the picture.

There’s the main rabbit hole. Now, for the other one. The person that traded Hybis’s belt for the goofy ahh hat was looking for Degesu…but due to being lost, ends up finding Gomah instead. She gives him the belt, and Gomah is excited, and even lets her take treasure as payment. The funniest part of this episode was watching Gomah struggle to remove the Third Eye from Hybis’s belt. As for whether he gets it out or not…I’m leaving that for next week, because if the vibe I’m getting from next week’s episode based on the title and preview is correct, Gomah’s going to have a decent amount of focus, which would allow me to cover that more effectively.

Personally, I enjoyed this episode. My enjoyment was heightened due to the Gendarmerie Squad being in the episode, and one of the two clear objects of desire have been achieved. Next stop, getting the Dragon Balls. Of course, it isn’t going to be easy. But with this episode doing well to propel the story forward, I’ll be watching to see what happens next week, and hope that the series continues this forward progression.
