PRELIMINARY OPINION: Delico’s Nursery

I love shows that involve families in slice-of-life situations. I also love shows that involve action and blood. But you know what’s even more fun? When a series takes both of my loves and mush them together! That’s probably why I enjoy Spy x Family, as it also does that. So, when I read the synopsis for Delico’s Nursery in Crunchyroll’s Seasonal Lineup, I felt this would be a series I would enjoy. And now, after having watched the first three episodes, what do I think about the series?

This will include spoilers for the first episode of Delico’s Nursery at the very least. If you haven’t watched Delico’s Nursery yet, it can stream on Crunchyroll, at least in the United States. Episodes are available to free users a week after they’re available for premium users.

The first episode certainly starts strong. And by that, I mean it starts in an extremely serious bloodbath. The circumstances surrounding this get clarified in Episode 3, but this is an excellent way to hook the viewer into the story as it pops up questions that the viewer wants answered. I may be exaggerating when I say this episode begins as a “serious bloodbath,” but that’s the best I can think of to describe it. I’m bad with words, especially when scripting videos like this…for some reason.

One dead wife later, Dali is determined to actively raise his kids, unlike the other nobles who just let the hired help do the raising. Good job, Dali. He also has a job and gets hired for a mission and—

Wait, what do you mean he declined the mission?! That’s not what we’ve come to expect from shows like this! He’s supposed to accept the mission! How…What—

[black screen that says, “Sara then proceeded to rant for 25 minutes about how Spy x Family is the superior show because Loid accepted the mission.”]

[“lol, just kidding, this was a scripted gag.”]

Anyway, to figure out why Dali refused to accept the mission, the people he was assigned to be with now have to investigate. As it turns out, the entire reason he declined the mission was to be able to spend more time raising his kids.

Look, I know I’m heavily glazing over details regarding the mission’s situation, but some of these things have a more significant impact if they are revealed to you without knowing what they are first rather than being spoiled for you.

Probably the one thing I feel comfortable revealing is that the situation is connected to something known as “True of VAMP”—which in the show is abbreviated to “TRUMP,” and I need to iterate that it is not connected to a US political candidate with the same name. Sorry, just with this being released during the time that’s gearing up for election season, this is probably needed so that those who are more focused on US Politics instead of anime don’t automatically assume I’m talking about him. I know the video name is probably a huge hint, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, am I right?

But let’s get back to the point because I’m afraid I’m getting too derailed. After a discussion, Dali says he’s willing to accept the mission…on the condition that everyone working with him balances the mission and raising their children, even going as far as doing their mission stuff in the same room that the children use to play. I’m not complaining; it leads to a funny interaction in Episode 3.

And that is just the first episode of Delico’s Nursery—at least the portions that focus on Dali and his co-workers. The other two episodes balance learning more about the case with the adults raising the kids. We also see some scenes of the people committing the crimes, but I think describing them as more than just “serial murder cases” would be spoiling you guys too heavily for the story.

My favorite moments in those two episodes were in Episode 2 when one of the kids began crying after another began crying due to having an accident – something which, if my mom’s Facebook posts are leading me correctly, is something I would’ve done as a child – and in Episode 3 when the kid that wears glasses – I’m bad at remembering names, I know – engages in conversations with what I only assume to be either plushies or imaginary friends that seem to represent his thoughts and that child breaking down somewhat due to it. It could be possible that he has some form of anxiety, though since I’m not a psychologist, don’t take what I’m saying as a concrete diagnosis.

Like…if it weren’t for the fact that this doesn’t appear to be taking place in the modern day, I’d advocate getting this child screened for any anxiety disorder – most notably generalized anxiety disorder – as I think it could explain why he’s acting this way.

I’ve been enjoying the show, and I hope they can develop all the prominent cast members equally—especially the kids. Although this is a 13-episode series, I fear that the whole story may not be able to be told with just a single cour. As such, until I get evidence that proves that the entire story can be said in one cour, even though this series isn’t done airing yet, I am advocating for season two.

Right now, Delico’s Nursery has the Sara Talks Anime! Seal of approval…which means that it’s a series that I think is high-quality writing-wise and that I recommend watching, either in its current simulcast format or once the series is done airing, if you haven’t already.

…I should probably make a Google Doc or website or something with all of the shows with the Sara Talks Anime! Seal of approval to make it easier to find shows that I think are worth watching, based on my taste in anime. Let me know if you’d like to see that in the comments below and if you have any shows you think I should check out based on what shows I’ve already talked about enjoying on here; that way, it’s like we’re exchanging anime recs!

Also, I know recording my face instead of using my silly mascot is weird, but this is probably the format I’ll have to use for most of the videos on this channel once I go to college, though I’m just using this video as a test run. If enough of you are vocally against me showing my face instead of using the cat-girl, I’ll probably never record my face for this channel again. I’m just trying this as it would give me less editing to do while at college.

And if there’s anything you think I could improve on next time, please let me know! I won’t be making more Preliminary Opinion videos until October, when the Fall 2024 anime season starts, so now’s the perfect chance for you to voice any feedback you have and have pretty much a guarantee of me improving it!

I’d also like to convince you guys to debate about the anime in the comments; just please be respectful, and if someone presents an opinion you don’t like, hate the opinion, not the person.
