Sara Talks Anime

When I’m writing this (the same day that this episode premiered. I think having a season gap between what I’m doing writeups for makes a bit more sense for my current life circumstances), life is just life-ing for me. Then again, I didn’t get much sleep the night before. Double that with having a morning shift for a job and a college class afterward…yeah, it’s a bit rough. But I still made the time to watch the episode and will provide my thoughts on it.

One thing that needs to be made clear at the start of this review is that premieres are intended to hook the audience and introduce the premise. This is usually done for mysteries by doing a bigger mystery that can be somewhat wacky to show how well the writer can deal with mysteries. Afterward, the mysteries become easier to solve before they return to the level of the premiere. During this time, other aspects of the show could take a dive. However, it’s likely because we’re in the “awkward” section of the show, and I’ll stay to see if it successfully gets out of it.

The episode begins with two twins standing on a train platform, talking about a cursed video, and the two begin watching it. Afterward, while one of the twins remains unaffected, the other walks off of the train platform, with the light in her eyes being gone.

Cut to Takahashi and the doctor he was working with in episode one talking to each other while on break. This is when we have more of the cursed video talk, and when we find out that Mafuyu, the girl who walked off the train platform, had survived and had ended up getting admitted into a psych ward, as the doctor that examined her was convinced that it was a suicide attempt due to too much stress. The female doctor also comments that the cursed video stuff would be right up Takao’s alley, to which Takahashi states that this can’t be brought up to her, because she won’t stop investigating until the case is solved.

Only one tiny issue. The female doctor already told the department that Takao works in would be willing to investigate the case. As a result, the other twin (I forgot her name, sorry. This was written across multiple days, and I’m too tired to look stuff up right now) ends up opening up to Takao about information about the video and about the similarities between her and Mafuyu. To get more information, Takao decides to head to the psych ward. In disguise as a high school student because she’s banned from the psych ward! Good going, Takao.

Here, Takao gets Mafuyu’s point of view on what happened, to be able to get both sides of the story. While she does get the information she needs, one of the doctors in the psych ward recognizes Takao and basically tells her to get out.

So, back in her house, Takao watches the video that caused all of this, not noticing a detail that Mafuyu brought up. It isn’t until she gets called up and told that the other twin got admitted into the ER that Takao manages to put all of the pieces together for her diagnosis of the situation.

While the answer is rather simple, we can’t have every single episode be “person died, have Takao figure out how”. With a mystery series, it’s good to have a wide variety of cases, because there’s a wide variety of crimes. Based on the name for the next episode, it seems like we’re going to be getting into another case involving death, and I am betting that this will be a mystery that spans two or more episodes. While the answer will already be revealed when this writeup comes out, remember that I write these when the show is actually airing, so don’t hit me with your “erm, actually” stuff.

But after three episodes, I will be sticking with this series. It’s been so fun to see everything come together for the mysteries, and I can’t wait to see how the other cases play out! ‘till next week, folks!
