The episode begins with Umika writing in her journal, reflecting on the events of the previous episode. Afterward, she heads to this world’s version of Google and looks up how to build a rocket…and only finds how to make bottle rockets. The attempt we see her make at improving her search causes her to find a bottle rocket launcher, and Umika even comments that it’s more adult than she wanted. At school, we see that Umika has done quite a bit of research…and that making a standard rocket is outside of her skill range at the moment, with her having thought that rockets ran on some sort of miracle power. Despite this, she’s still willing to give it her all.
And Umika does get to see Yu, with Yu giving a greeting in the alien language. And that greeting (as well as its response) appear to be commonly used between Yu and the other students. Of course, this causes Umika to feel a bit down, as Yu is able to fit in with the students. The two get approached by Haruno Takaragi, who asks Umika and Yu if they went into the lighthouse on the cape. Before a response can come out, however, the bell to start class rings. As the school day progresses, Umika begins to fear for the worst when it comes to what could happen to Yu if anyone found out about the lighthouse. She is snapped out of these thoughts by the teacher, and when Umika doesn’t know what to do, Haruno provides guidance for Umika.
During the break, Umika tries to tell Yu to not tell Haruno about the lighthouse, but it fails, as Yu is beginning to talk about her base, causing Umika to put her hands over Yu’s mouth. And when Haruno asks about it, Umika’s hands move to Haruno’s mouth, and Umika ends up pushing the two to an empty classroom. Umika tries yet again to not have Yu tell Haruno about the base, but Yu decides to just drop the fact she lives in a lighthouse. Umika tries to cover this up by taking the blame for everything, but Haruno was under the impression that the two were lighthouse connoisseurs, and that the lighthouse is one of her favorite locations. And when it’s revealed that the lighthouse doesn’t get visited much anymore, Yu wants to advertise the lighthouse to those in space. This encounter also has us learn that Haruno has always wanted to talk to an alien. Haruno is also let in on the promise that Yu and Umika made, which ends up adding Haruno to the friend group.
To try and get experience building rockets, Umika decides to try and build something small. What she ends up finding is instructions for a bottle rocket. After finding the time to finally bring up the idea to Yu and Haruno, and the rest of the episode is seen with the three building and launching the rocket. After the credits, we see a small scene where we see part of Yu decorating the rocket, putting the alien word for friend or comrade on there.
And with this episode, the friend group has risen to three! The opening and the ending show Umika, Yu, Haruno, and one other girl. I’ve never read the source material, so I don’t know when she ends up joining the friend group, but due to her appearing in both the opening and ending, it’s extremely likely that she’ll join the friend group this season. The plot of this episode was enjoyable, and it felt like the episode ended in a way that the audience would be content with. It’ll be interesting to see where the episode goes for next week.
