Stardust Telepath Episode 6 – “Salutatory Initiation”

As it turns out…I was wrong in the write-up for the last episode. The study camp was wrapped up in one episode. I’ve never read the source material for Stardust Telepath, so I don’t know if it’s exactly the same there or not, but to me at least, the ending of the last episode didn’t really suggest that it was the end of the camp. Maybe it’s me not catching something in the previous episode, or maybe it’s me expecting clearer storytelling than I should be expecting from a Cute Girls Doing Cute Things show, but so far, that’s the only criticism that I have with the show.

Anyways, the episode begins with Umika preparing to leave for school, having a talk with her sister on the way. When Umika arrives at school, Yu greets her like usual and does her usual foreheadpathy, catching the attention of Haruno, Matataki, and two other students. We then get to see the four main girls in a classroom, waiting for their teacher to come back with the news of the status of the club. And as it turns out, the club got accepted…except it’s not a club, it’s a hobby group. With no additional funding (except for 3,000 yen given to them by the teacher), an empty classroom after school for a meeting room, and their teacher as the advisor, a bit of hope appears to be lost.

That’s when the four girls head down to the secret base in the lighthouse, with Matataki being surprised at the existence of it. This conversation is also how we find out that the lights of the lighthouse suddenly began working when Yu arrived. They also do a toast while in the room, with Umika leading it. Later when Umika is home, she’s searching on the internet and finds something. As is revealed through her little sister’s thoughts, Umika isn’t the best with computers, and thought Umika was improving…but when Umika asks her little sister regarding PDF files (and, at least in Crunchyroll’s English subtitles, getting the file type name wrong), her little sister thinks that Umika hasn’t changed at all.

The next day at school, we see that Matataki had gotten injured…and that injury came from her dad throwing a tool at her. Haruno puts a band aid over the mark, and the four head back to the secret base, where Matataki begins teaching the group about model rockets. Yu tries to do foreheadpathy to see if she can understand what was being said better…and ends up getting an information overload. After some time spent together, Umika shows the group a poster for a model rocket launching festival, and the four decide to head there, with the teacher tagging along as well. We get to see the girl who helped Umika and her friends with getting plastic bottles for their competition against Matataki, and we get to learn more about her. At the end of the episode, a friendly rivalry is sparked up between the girl and Umika and her friends, as both will be participating in a model rocket launching contest. There’s also a skit after the ending theme where the teacher is showing someone pictures that don’t really have a good view, but head over to Haruno when she said that she has a video.

This was a fun little episode! I love how the episode provides information about model rockets, as those details may not be as well known. It also goes to show that the creator of the source material did their research. I hope that throughout the course of the series, the hobby group does end up becoming a club! I can’t wait for next week’s episode, and I have the feeling it’s going to be great!
