I don’t know if it’s because of how much effort I put into my previous post compared to usual or what, but I’m struggling to come up with a good way to lead into this post. This is probably going to be an issue for the remainder of the Summer 2026 anime season. Ah, the trials and tribulations of covering a series you’re really passionate about on the day before covering a series that I thought was peak at first only for it to end up being more middling at this point in the series.
And man, I do not feel like I’m exaggerating when I say that to me at this point, Clevatess feels like a show that’s just constantly jingling its keys to try and keep my attention by raising the stakes and finally addressing that one thing I was complaining about in Season 1. Honestly, I feel like this series is officially falling off for me. I’ll say it now, I’ll still watch to the end of this season, but if we do get a third season, I’m not going to be quick to watch it unless something is done within the final three episodes for me to see the part of this season I’m losing interest in as anything but jingling keys.
While this episode does establish some important stuff for the lore, finally giving us the proper addressing of that thing that Clevatess himself was sealed in and it breaking, as well as having a pretty serious conclusion, I’m just feeling…meh. If your series is at what I can only assume to be its most serious moment and all I’m feeling is “meh”, then I’m pretty sure that isn’t a good sign.
Honestly, I feel like the reason why I’m finding this season to be so mid is because it changes…well, something about this series too much for my tastes. I feel like there could have been so many more ways to continue the story of Clevatess without going down this route that still made sense in the narrative. It’s too late to go back and change the story, but to me, it feels like this school arc wasn’t fully earned. Yes, the kingdoms came together to discuss finding Drel’s secret room, but I feel like it’s too much of a tool to make this arc make sense.
Additionally, I feel like this school arc is really being spread thin over this season, compared to Season 1, especially since season 1 felt like a very good pace, considering that the story beats were given proper time to shine alongside the moments to transition between them, and the reasons for those transitions make sense.
Here, however, it feels like some decisions are only being made to prolong the story, like how many different perspectives we jump to or how much lore is being added. While I’m glad for the lore due to it expanding the world, I feel like the visuals are what’s ultimately hiding cracks in how the story is presented.
Now, I don’t know if this is just an issue with the anime, or if it’s something that’s hiding deeper in the source material. Hell, I even plan on reading Clevatess on Webtoon after the conclusion of this season just to see whether my issues with Clevatess are only present in the anime, or if not even the Webtoon can save me from it. Won’t cover my reading of the Webtoon on this site on a post-by-post basis, but when this season concludes, I’ll make sure to point you guys in the direction of where to go to read my thoughts about the Clevatess Webtoon as I read it.
