Meitantei Precure Episode 18 – “Star Detectives Assemble”

This is likely going to be the one time that I use a different image for the featured image for this series. In my defense, it perfectly highlights why I was so excited for this episode: it’s the Detective Conan crossover! Even if the actual animation in the episode put Conan, Ran, and Kogoro in the Meitantei Precure style instead of letting them vibe in the Detective Conan style, I’m literally only changing the featured image for one episode, so I see no reason why I shouldn’t do this. Anyway, time to talk about the episode.

We begin in the art museum from Episode 11, where Jett, Anna, and Mikuru are setting up an art exhibit at the Hosho Art Museum…well, mainly Jett out of the three. Anna and Mikuru are ooh-ing and aah-ing at the exhibit instead of actually helping out. During the setup, someone walks in with boxes intended for the room.

As it turns out, however, this was a setup for a trick to go off, with a bunch of shoes that look like the one that Anna and Mikuru were seen gushing over at that moment getting spread around, with the actual piece disappearing in the chaos.

Now, in a typical Meitantei Precure episode, this is when Anna and Mikuru would be the sole investigators. Since this is the Detective Conan crossover, however, the police force of Makoto Mirai City come to aide in the investigation, even if just long enough to give the Detective Conan fans watching this episode something familiar to normalize themselves with.

Due to the increased police presence, however, Jett decides to head back to the CUREtto Detective Agency to finish getting the other pieces ready for the exhibit. They try to investigate on their own, but it seems this case is outside of their usual pay grade.

Before I continue this talk, I just need to point out that they really went all out when it came to melding Detective Conan into this. When it came to the title card, it began with the doors to the CUREtto Detective Agency opening onto a usual section of the Meitantei Precure title card, similar to (and more thematically connected to) how Detective Conan episodes lead into their title cards. And here, we get a Detective Conan reference!

A figure of pure black with the only non black feature being their eyes looks out from a window.
“It’s the culprit’s shadow!” Detective Conan fans everywhere yell.

Considering that this is the Detective Conan crossover, it makes sense that they slide in a way to hide the culprit like they do in Detective Conan. Yes, I’m trying to keep track of all of them.

Anyway, as Anna and Mikuru are looking for clues…

A familiar pair of red and white sneakers are seen through a magnifying glass.
Conan Edogawa's upper body is in frame, showing his brown hair, blue eyes, glasses, red bow tie, and blue blazer.
Fun fact: When I was watching the preview for this episode at the end of Episode 17, I was in denial of this episode involving Conan until I saw his face appear in the preview.

Conan approaches them and interacts with them as the first grader that he currently appears to be. The only reason he was able to do so was because he sneaked away from Ran and Kogoro, though thankfully the two catch up with him. He also correctly identifies them as detectives. And how exactly does he do that?

Anna holding a heart shaped magnifying glass. Subtitles say "You're searching with a magnifying glass? That's a detective."
Shaking my head Conan, that’s clearly a mirror loupe, not a magnifying glass.
*looks it up*
…okay, maybe he’s right.

Introductions get passed around (alongside Conan getting Anna and Mikuru’s business cards!), and with it comes one of my favorite spoiler free interactions in the entire episode.

Mikuru: "Oh! N-not the famous Sleeping Kogoro?"
Anna, confused: "Who?"
Detective Conan fans looking at the Detective Conan characters in Meitantei Precure versus Meitantei Precure fans looking at the Detective Conan characters in Meitantei Precure (assuming that the Meitantei Precure fan has never heard of Detective Conan prior to this episode)

Since Anna is the lead Cure for Meitantei Precure, it makes sense that she’s the one who’s serving as the insert for Meitantei Precure fans who haven’t heard of Detective Conan fans until now. Plus, since these guys are real people in the world of Meitantei Precure, it’s most likely that in 2027, the news moved on from Kogoro due to him no longer giving the same great deductions, and thus kids in 2027 who keep up with news of detectives likely would’ve never heard of the Sleeping Kogoro. Though it’s weird to see Kogoro get written down that way in the subtitles. It might be the more accurate way to write it for romanization, but I’ve gotten so used to just seeing it as Kogoro that it’s hard for me to see it any other way.

As it turns out, the three are in town for a different case, though Conan takes Ran and Kogoro on just long enough of a detour to try and assist Anna and Mikuru with their case. He does his first grader inquiry, which causes Anna and Mikuru to think they’ve come to the answer, taking the two back to the CUREtto Detective Agency. Unfortunately, they didn’t fully hear Conan out, so the deduction they come to is incorrect.

After the revelation that their deduction is incorrect, there are visitors to the CUREtto Detective Agency…Conan, Ran, and Kogoro! They’ve wrapped up their case, and decided to stop by, likely because Conan egged them into it. During some investigation there, Anna, Mikuru, and Conan realize the solution.

Normally I don’t bring up eyecatches, but I will do so here to state that for this episode, the doors of the CUREtto Detective Agency are used to replicate the typical door eyecatch of Detective Conan. I thought this was a really nice way to really solidify the crossover aspect between the two. I don’t know if they’re going to go that far in the Detective Conan side of the crossover, but you can tell that the staff of Meitantei Precure were having fun with their side of the collab.

Anyway, Mikuru tries to lead the deduction, but is off-base. Conan decides he has to step in and tries to do Sleeping Kogoro action, only for Anna to move into his aiming area and get hit instead.

Conan, aiming his Stun Gun Wristwatch, looking stunned. Subtitles: "Oh no!"
Live Conan reaction, probably: “I hit a school aged person who presents as the opposite binary gender of me! Again!

I actually find this hilarious, as both Kogoro Mori and Anna Akechi derive part of their name from the same character. But Conan has Anna become the sleeping detective and provide the actual deduction. From here, aside from some intervention from both Ran and Conan prior to Anna and Mikuru transforming, as well as Conan running out to where Anna and Mikuru should be to find them gone, the magical girl fight part of the episode plays out as normal. I feel like the member of the Phantom Thieves’ Guild made the most sense to pick for this crossover, considering the phantom thief who Conan clashes with most often. If you know, you know.

After the usual fare, though, Anna and Mikuru regather with everyone, and also causes one of my other favorite interactions in this episode.

Mikuru, grabbing Anna's shoulders: "Yeah! It's like it wasn't you at all!"
Conan realizes that he just barely got away with doing the sleeping detective act. Kogoro and Ran are oblivious to the fact.
If there was ever a second crossover between these two shows, I want to see Mikuru having her suspicions about Conan for real instead of Anna just buying the sleeping detective act.

As Conan, Ran, and Kogoro head out, however, Anna calls out to Conan, asking about who he is due to him having such good deduction for a kid. Conan drops the “Edogawa Conan. Tantei-san.” that Detective Conan fans are familiar with, and Anna and Mikuru are just like “Bye Conan! :D”, thus ending the episode.

I know my images for this post were more so on the Detective Conan side compared to the Meitantei Precure side, but to be fair, I can see the Meitantei Precure characters in this style in all of the episodes, but this could be the only time I see Conan, Ran, and Kogoro in the Meitantei Precure style. As a result, it’s understandable that my screenshots leaned more towards the Conan charactes than the Precure characters.

But this was such a fun episode! I know I couldn’t give away the exact hints for the actual mystery, but that’s because I felt like even giving away one of them could’ve led you guys to the answer to how the piece got swapped. Maybe not the “who did it”, but I think both parts of this are fun to see get figured out during the actual episode. Unfortunately no “ah le le?” from Conan (crime, to be honest), and we didn’t get to see magical boy Conan (either in reality or in some sort of fantasy sequence) in this episode, but the Conan stuff that was present in this episode was still enjoyable.

Anyway, I love being ahead of the curve with my post titles. You want to know why I say this?

A picture of an episode preview. The Japanese episode title is written as "迷宮トレインにご招待!?" (Meikyū Torein ni Goshōtai!?), with the subtitles having it written as "Invitation to the Labyrinth Train?!"
IF CONAN MADE ME FREAK OUT LAST WEEK, THIS IS WHAT’S MAKING ME FREAK OUT THIS WEEK.

That’s right, Crunchyroll just officially use an interrobang for a Meitantei Precure episode in their subtitles. Let’s ignore the fact that they should’ve done so for Episode 5. And Episode 7. And Episode 16. Whatever. I was ahead of the curve in the end, and that’s what counts.

…if anyone asks, this post is my magnum opus. I don’t care that I’ve had longer. I don’t care if you don’t feel like this post isn’t up to my usual standards. If I say it’s my magnum opus, it’s my magnum opus.

Previous Post: Episode 17 – “Memories with Mom”

Next Post: Episode 19 (“Invitation to the Labyrinth Train?!”) hasn’t aired yet. Unless the episode gets delayed, the post should go live on June 7th, 2026 at 12 PM (PDT)
